Baby on Board. Am I the only mama bear on the road?

Six months ago, we brought home our newest baby girl.  We gently placed our little 7lb 7oz baby in the seat, carefully buckled the clamps so not to pinch her, and every so softly tightened the straps just enough for a finger to fit underneath. The car seat never looked so humungous. With the baby-in-seat on my lap, the nurse wheeled us down to the rotating doors of the hospital where my husband was waiting with our car.

This was the second first-car-ride home from the hospital and I felt exactly the same way as I did when my first daughter was born. My senses were on all-alert mode. We drove under the speed-limit, we’ve never come to a stop-sign or red-light with such grace and we’ve never been more critical of other ‘bad drivers’ on the road. I found myself angry at the way other people were driving. Although we have never owned a Baby on Board sign for our vehicles, I couldn’t think of a day where I wanted to alert people so badly to drive carefully. For goodness sake, we had a newborn in the car!

Anyone else with me on this or am I the only mama bear on the road?

  1. When I brought my oldest child home, he rode in my lap in a flimsy plastic “infant seat”. I thought I was the world’s best mom with the latest safety equipment protecting my darling son. Of course, that was over 42 years ago.
By the time he was 3, he had a “real car seat”. It had a padded U-bar & a snap on crotch strap. Again, I was on top of the issue with the latest & greatest stuff. Boy looking back, things sure have come a long way.
